You can feel rejuvenated in the tiredness, and here's how (and it's simple!)

Are you feeling the relentlessness of pandemic parenting?

I'm with you! Here's a little story from my home....

My daughter has really chapped hands in the fall and winter, especially now with all the washing and hand sanitizing.

Most nights I apply a soothing lotion as I say goodnight. It takes about five minutes, not even.

But last night I was tired, I just didn't want to. It had been another long day with zoom calls, remote learning, work, chores and, of course, the endless dishes.

I said no.

No, I don't want to rub this lotion on your hands tonight, I'm tired. I want a break! I want to be off the clock!

...Feel familiar?

But then something uncomfortable inside made me pause, and instead of ignoring it, I chose to pay attention to the discomfort.

I checked in and I realized I was missing a beautiful opportunity to connect. And sure enough (it never fails) the moment I chose love, I chose to give just those five minutes of focused attention and affection- my tired feeling magically went away!

Except I know it wasn't magic.

I know it's science. I know it's the bonding hormone oxytocin making me feel relaxed, peaceful- you know, the 'warm-fuzzy' feeling. I know that this simple (and short!) act of connecting after a long, tiring day, is creating repair and growth in my brain and body, and also in the brain and body of my daughter too.

Connecting can be so simple

Is there something you can do today? A simple act of attention, real focused affection, to connect with your child? (And for an added bonus, you might find that with the deep need for attention met, your child is able to navigate the day more smoothly, making it go by just a little bit easier for you!)

May the healing energy of pure love be with you,

Vanessa
